Symptoms

Plants of susceptible lettuce cultivars respond to BBWV infection with varying degrees of foliar malformation, chlorotic mottle, brownish veinal necrosis, and interveinal necrotic pitting. Infected plants are stunted and produce small, poorly formed heads with loose leaves (Fig. 95). When exposed to stress caused by low nighttime and high daytime temperatures, infected plants develop a prominent reddish-brown color at the margins of affected leaves. Plants of cultivars with resistance retain their normal size and vigor and may be symptomless or show only a mild and often transient chlorotic mottle.
